Millennium Digest (1950-2003) on Wildlife & Ancillary Laws

The Indian judiciary has evolved and come a long way since the country became independent in 1947. Courts throughout the country have given landmark judgments that have set precedents for subsequent cases. Judgments related to social and government issues are regularly compiled by agencies and by legal publications, but no real effort has been made to compile judgments related to wildlife and its ancillary laws. Whatever information exists is scanty and is not comprehensive.

To fill this void, a Millennium Digest comprising laws and judgments related to The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, and other ancillary Acts, is being prepared by WPSI. The digest will include: the Indian Constitution's statutory provisions that relate to wildlife and forests; the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986; the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980; the Indian Forest Act, 1927; the Indian Penal Code, 1860; the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973; and State forest laws, international treaties, and wildlife conventions. The Digest will also contain extracts, summaries, and judgments on selected cases related to wildlife.

The subject of wildlife covers a wide spectrum and this compilation is targeted at lawyers, managers, enforcement agencies, the development sector and wildlife conservationists. It will help create awareness on wildlife enforcement issues and will assist the judiciary, public administrators, managers and policy makers in understanding wildlife laws and their effective implementation.
