Support to Corbett Tiger Reserve & Adjoining Forests
Elephant &
Boat for Anti-poaching Patrols:
Corbett Tiger Reserve, named after the famous hunter
turned conservationist Jim Corbett, lies in the state
of Uttaranchal. The Tiger Reserve consists of Corbett
National Park, Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and some
Reserve Forest areas.
In
September 2001, WPSI provided a new fibreglass motorboat
to Corbett Tiger Reserve for use by the Forest Department
on anti-poaching patrols in Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary.
“Sonakali”, a female elephant
who we donated to the Tiger Reserve in 1999, is being
used by Forest Department staff at Sonanadi Wildlife
Sanctuary for anti-poaching patrols. This enables them
to man isolated posts during monsoon seasons. WPSI provides
rations to Sonakali and pays an allowance to her mahout.
Compensation to Forest Guard
Injured by Poachers:
In September 2001, a Deputy Ranger was gunned down and
three Forest Guards were injured when their unarmed
team encountered a group of poachers inside the park.
WPSI provided Rs 5,000 (just over US$100) to cover the
medical expenses of the injured Forest Guards.
