How to help curb India's wildlife crisis You Can Help There
are a number of organisations dedicated to saving our wildlife and your
support can further strengthen their efforts and consequently, the
conservation movement in India. Here are some ways you can help save
our wildlife: Donating and Fundraising:
You
could start by donating to or fundraising for conservation efforts in
India. It is important to thoroughly research the organisation or
initiative that you wish to donate to. You could also undertake
fundraising campaigns within your organisation, school, colony etc. and
raise donations for organisations involved in the conservation
movement. There are many creative and fun ways of raising funds for a
cause that you believe in, and remember, no amount is too small!: o
Organise a fundraising event such as a sale to raise funds or a dinner,
or you could run a marathon for a cause (Websites such as justgiving.com allow you to raise funds and donate to your chosen charity or NGO online). o
Encourage workplace-giving by encouraging fellow employees to donate to
the charities they care about through making payroll pledges and
contributing a few rupees per month. o
Family celebrations and parties can become great opportunities to
support a cause. People often make donations on behalf of a couple's
wedding, birthdays, performances etc. o
You could leave something in your will to your favourite conservation
charity. If you are interested in such planned giving, please get in
touch with us and we would be happy to guide you through the
formalities. Stay Informed The
more aware you are of the status and plight of India's wildlife and
wild places, the more effective you will be in helping to save it. You
can stay informed of the current conservation efforts being undertaken
across the country through the media, current publications and the
internet. You can also get in touch with local wildlife organisations
for up-to-date information.
Create Awareness
Once
you are armed with knowledge, spread the word to your friends, family
and community leaders. There are many innovative ways to create
awareness, you could:
o
Organise an event such as a walk or an exhibition, that educates the
public about wildlife o Write letters to the editor of a newspaper o
Write letters or petitions to your community leaders and to national
and international leaders o Start a blog or newsletter to keep your friends, families and co-workers informed

The
conservation movement now calls for collective action, for civil
society to join the fight against poaching, illegal wildlife trade, and
wildlife crime, and for all stakeholders to work together to conserve
our natural heritage.
o
Choose Wildlife conservation as your career. The expansion of the
conservation movement sees the need for people from all sectors, such
as lawyers, computer operators, designers etc. Consider making
conservation your career, or spending a couple of years of your career
in a conservation-related profession. o
Volunteer with an environmental/wildlife NGO. Support an NGO by
offering them your time or skills. Before you take this step, research
the field and organisation that you wish to assist. Once you have
short-listed an organisation, be sure that their basic philosophy is
similar to what you believe in. Get in touch and offer your services!
